The first of three Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Graduation ceremonies was held at Red Oak-Sturgeon Elementary School on March 1, 2013. The D.A.R.E. program is a collaboration between the Brunswick County School System and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. The program is taught by Lieutenant Derrick Mays. Students in the program are taught valuable ways to stay away from drugs, alcohol, smoking, and dangerous situations. They are also taught ways to handle peer pressure, ways to be in charge, and what steps to take if being bullied. The guest speaker for the program was Sheriff Brian Roberts.
